Vancouver's best museums are those that specialize. The best is the Museum of Anthropology at the University of British Columbia. Not only is the art stunning but the archives are accessible and the building is one of the most striking buildings in the city. If you're thinking of collecting First Nations art, you won't find a better place to develop a trained eye. If you want to get a sense of Vancouver life in the 19th and early 20th century, visit the Roedde House. Unlike most house museums, this one is not cordoned off, so you can wander through the rooms and get genuine feel for the experience of living in the past.
Vancouver's Art Gallery is in fact the city Art Museum. It always has something interesting going on both inside and outside on the lawn and steps. And it's got a great museum store.
If you go to Granville Island, located, by the way, right downtown Vancouver, stop in at the model railroad, model ship and fishing museums.
